We will begin Unit 7 after Spring Break!

This Unit will include:

Open syllable type

Y as a vowel

Combing open and closed syllable words

Y, ly, and ty as a suffix

 

Reader’s Workshop- For the next 3 days we will be working with a story called: A House for Hermit Crab.

An open syllable has only one vowel and it does not have a consonant after it.

Ex: go, flu, we , I

 

You must mark the vowel with a macron to indicate it has a long sound and says its name.

How can you divide it keep the first syllable open (so the vowel is long and says its name)?

dict is a closed syllable with a short /i/ sound

Unit 7 – Week 3

  • Practice your consonant and vowel drill sounds, vowel teams, glued, and r-controlled sounds.

 

A suffix is added to the end of a word to change its meaning.

 

  • Words of the Day-Write each word in your Monster workbook under Vocabulary. Mark each word and use it in a sentence. Remember a capital and stop sign.  Show me on See Saw.

chilly

The base word is chill.  Underline the baseword and circle the vowel suffix y. When you add “y” as a suffix- it ALWAYS says long /e/.

It describes someone or something.

 

safety

            The base word is safe. Underline the baseword and circle the suffix -ty.  When you add “ty” as a suffix it is considered a consonant suffix. 

bravely

            The base word is brave.  Underline the baseword  and circle the suffix -ly.  When you add “ly” as a suffix it becomes an adverb which describes HOW.

 

The boy walked bravely down the stairs.   How did he walk?  Bravely.

2- Watch and listen to me read Mercy Watson to the Rescue- Chapters 7-8- link attached

Go onto See Saw and find the comprehension worksheet for Chapters 7-8.

  • I know everyoneis doing the BESTthat they can during remote learning. It is IMPORTANT for me to be able to hear you read on RAZkids.com so I can document what you are doing and how well you are reading.  The Mercy Watson Unit is also very important because we will be ending the year with A LOT of comprehension activities! 2- Go onto See Saw.  Your assignments are a noun and verb worksheet.  Remember a noun is a person, place, thing object or thing animal.  Remember a verb can show action.

There is also a buttered toast writing activity.  I would like you to write 5 full sentences about your favorite food.  Include WHAT it is, WHY you love to eat it, WHERE do you get it from.  All sentences must have a capital and a stop sign.

 The book Mercy Watson to the Rescue had a lot of fact and opinion in it.  

Ex: Eugenia thinks that pigs should not live in a house- That is her opinion.

Ned and Lorenzo were firemen.- That is a fact.

 

3- Go on to Raz kids.com and record a story for me to listen to and do the comprehension questions.
