VB-MAPP- The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP) is used with your child to expand their skills through the verbal operants. The verbal operants are foundational in developing language and communication skills. Verbal operants include the mand, tact, echoic, intraverbal, listener responding, motor imitation, and visual perception match-to-sample.


Mand (Requesting) Activities

Requesting preferred items (with or without item present)

Requesting missing items needed to complete an activity (ex: requesting “spoon” when given yogurt to eat

Requesting actions from others (ex: “push” on the swing or “open” for assistance)


Tact (Labeling) Activities

Labeling reinforcing items (ex: Mommy, cookie, bubbles)

Labeling non-reinforcing items (common objects – animals, vehicles, clothing, furniture, food, school supplies)

Labeling colors/shapes

Labeling ongoing actions in the environment (clapping, dancing)

Can read a book/look at a book and have child label items in the pictures


Listener Responding Activities

Attending to a speaker’s voice by making eye contact

Responding when name is called

Performing motor actions on command (ex: jump, touch head, clap)

Following 1 to 3 step directions (ex: come here, stop, wait, get the _____)


Visual Perceptual Skills/Matching to Sample Activities

Visually tracking items

Using a pincer grasp

Placing items in a container/placing rings on a peg/stacking items

Matching items/pictures

Sorting colors/shapes

Independent Play Activities

Varying play by interacting with different objects

Engaging in movement play (dancing, jumping, swinging)

Engaging in cause-and-effect play (dumping containers, ball drop toys)

Searching for missing items from toys

Playing with toys according to their function

Social Behavior & Social Play Activities

Making eye contact

Imitating motor movements (with or without objects) when prompted with “do this” or “copy me” (ex: jumping, touching toes, rolling ball)

When reading/looking at a book, selecting the correct item based on the feature, function, or class (ex: Find something you eat and child points out a cookie)


Intraverbal Activities

Providing responses to fill-in statements (ex: ‘The Wheels on the ____’ or ‘ready, set, _____’)

Sitting at a table without negative behavior or trying to leave the table
