Home Learning: Life Skills

When we are in school, we practice various life skills/activities of daily living. These skills help to foster independence, and will be functional throughout their lives. Carrying these skills over at home is a great way to continue practicing and generalizing them. The following are examples of some activities you can try at home:

  • Picking up toys
  • Putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket
  • Vacuuming
  • Dusting
  • Helping to organize books, games, videos, etc..
  • Emptying wastebaskets
  • Making the bed
  • Clearing the table
  • Helping prepare meals and snacks
  • Wiping off the counters
  • Wiping off the table after meals or snacks
  • Putting dirty dishes into the sink or dishwasher
  • Feeding the pets
  • Watering plants
  • Self-Care skills (toileting, washing hands, brushing teeth, combing hair, getting dressed)
