Social skills to work when playing a game:

1) "Who is going to go first?" Ask, pretend you want to go first also. Work on compromising "Maybe I can go first this time, and next time you can go first?" OR perform "Rock, Paper, Scissors", draw from a hat.   Use the fun phrase "you get what you get, and you don't get UPSET!"

2) Turn taking: make sure your child is taking turns, but also paying attention to whose turn it is.
- Check in with your child throughout the game: ask "whose turn is it?"

3) Work on appropriate social interactions/verbalizations: "Its your turn" or "its my turn" when appropriate, and using the correct pronoun.

4) Work on self-regulation skills such as accepting loss/ being a good sport. "You may not always win, but did you have fun?" "Maybe you will win next time ! Want to play again?" Discuss how others might feel if your child is being a sore loser. "Will your friends want to play with you if you act like that after losing?" Assure and explain that it is OKAY to feel disappointed and sad when you lose. But it is HOW YOU ACT this is important and a part of being a good friend.
Give your son/daughter phrases to use in order to be a "good sport": "Good game!" "Good job" "I had fun" "Want to play again?"

Check out the following read aloud: "Sally, Sore Loser" to review being a good sport.

Work on rolling dice, counting, and finding the number with the "Printable Roll & Cover game" below...IN ADDITION TO the social skills above.
